In November 2021, the Paris Peace Forum will focus on spurring a more inclusive recovery and offering initiatives to better tend to global challenges and global commons.

Each year, governance projects proposing concrete solutions to global challenges are invited to the Forum’s Space for Solutions and contribute to debates. CALL FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST : Women’s Economic Empowerment in a Low-Carbon COVID-19 Recovery

Call for Expressions of Interest: Women’s Economic Empowerment in a Low-Carbon COVID-19 Recovery

Call for Expressions of Interest: Women Economic Empowerment in a Low-Carbon COVID-19 Recovery

Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC) is pleased to announce a new research funding opportunity, implemented through its Sustainable Inclusive Economies division. This call for expressions of interest aims to advance the generation and use of context-specific evidence that can contribute to women’s increased economic empowerment in the Global South, in the context of lower-income countries’ responses to the COVID-19 pandemic and growing climate crisis.

Scope and Eligibility

This CAD$ 10 million call is made available through an open competitive process targeting organizations based in low- and lower-middle-income countries, in Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, South and South-East Asia, and the Middle East. It is designed for organizations that will contribute to building more inclusive and sustainable pandemic responses and recovery in low- and lower-middle-income countries and will support solutions-oriented research that addresses the following research questions:

  • In COVID-19 responses and recovery, what policy responses, interventions, business and investment initiatives, and women-led actions and organizations can effectively support women’s economic empowerment through the provision of inclusive and decent employment opportunities while addressing the growing climate crisis and creating a pathway for a climate-resilient economy? Which interventions and solutions have the potential for scale?
  • What policies, business and investment initiatives, and support for small and medium-sized enterprises can promote women’s opportunities in sectors that have the highest potential to accelerate the transition towards a low-carbon economy, such as energy, transport, infrastructure, tourism, agriculture, and natural resource conservation?
  • What policies, business, and innovative finance initiatives can promote cross-border trade and value chains that promote quality opportunities for women while contributing to decarbonization and climate resilience?
  • How can the transition to sustainable production and green jobs accelerate the COVID-19 recovery, and that create economic opportunities for women? What public policies and incentives can support these?

Call Details

The Sustainable Inclusive Economies division will allocate CAD$ 10 million through this call, with selected projects receiving funding between CAD $750,000 - CAD $ 1,000,00010 to 13 research projects will be funded with projects scheduled to be completed within a timeframe not exceeding 30 months, including all research activities and final reporting.

PRAYING THE UN's SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS TOWARDS CHANGING THE WORLD BY 2030

PRAYING THE UN’s SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS This post as composed by Laura Marie Piotrowicz of Anglican Cycle of Prayers, Canada introduces the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals in brief prayers. More information can be found at https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org 1. Most Holy One, help us to recognize our position of (relative) abundance. May we be inspired and empowered to support people, frameworks, and resources to END POVERTY IN ALL ITS FORMS EVERY WHERE that all your children may know the abundant life your Son came to deliver. 2. God of plenty, we celebrate the beauty of the harvest. We delight in the systems and structures that exist, allowing us to know the 5 A’s (availability, accessibility, acceptability, appropriateness, agency) of food security. Help us to improve these systems, to share the manna you provide, as we work to END HUNGER, ACHIEVE FOOD SECURITY AND IMPROVED NUTRITION, AND PROMOTE SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE. 3. God of healing, you are the great physician, promising spiritual health. As your Son taught his disciples to heal, may we use our gifts of memory, reason, and skill to ENSURE HEALTHY LIVES AND PROMOTE WELL-BEING FOR ALL AT ALL AGES. May our work in research, development, and provision reflect your compassion for everyone, everywhere, to overcome those realities of our world which threaten our health? 4. God of learning, in our baptism we ask to receive the gift of an inquiring and discerning heart. We are privileged to be nourished and encouraged by education as a “pervasive life experience.” May our grateful response be to work to ENSURE INCLUSIVE AND EQUITABLE QUALITY EDUCATION AND PROMOTE LIFELONG LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL? 5. God of love, you have made us in your image. Male and female, You created us; yet we continue to discriminate against half of your children. We pray, O God of equality, that we may help create societies where gender does not initiate rejection, violence, and injustice. May our hearts yearn and inspire to ACHIEVE GENDER EQUALITY AND EMPOWER ALL WOMEN AND GIRLS. 6. Holy One, you repeatedly teach us of the fluidity of grace and justice through the simple element of water. In our baptism we receive the promise of true life as we are physically and spiritually made clean. May we, with joy, ENSURE AVAILABILITY AND SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT OF WATER AND SANITATION FOR ALL, so all may know water to be a wondrous and healing gift from You 7. The wind blows where it wishes, and the sun shines where it will, and the waves and tides are directed by forces beyond this earth. While we may not fully know where such energies come from, we trust in the Spirit who reveals their potential to us. May we use this trust to ENSURE ACCESS TO AFFORDABLE, RELIABLE, SUSTAINABLE, AND CLEAN ENERGY FOR ALL? 8. Empowering God, your Holy Spirit pours upon each of us wonderful gifts, encouraging us to use and share these spiritual gifts through the works of our hands. Help us to PROMOTE SUSTAINED, INCLUSIVE, AND SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC GROWTH, FULL AND PRODUCTIVE EMPLOYMENT, AND DECENT WORK FOR ALL, celebrating everyone’s role as contributors to the building up of our earthly societies and of your glorious kingdom. 9. God of patience, throughout the ages we have failed to live in equality. Forgive us our greed, and help us to mature and grow. May we BUILD RESILIENT INFRASTRUCTURE, PROMOTE INCLUSIVE AND SUSTAINABLE INDUSTRIALISATION AND FOSTER INNOVATION, thereby encouraging a more just society, to the benefit of all. 10. Gracious God, you made us all in your image, yet we find and create ways to discriminate. Help us to see beyond the divisions of social, economic, and political exclusion, and REDUCE INEQUALITY WITHIN AND AMONG COUNTRIES, delighting in the great variety you create from your perfect love. 11. Unifying God, you call us together in your love to be one family. May this inspire us out of patterns of co-existence into celebrations of community? May we intentionally MAKE CITIES AND HUMAN SETTLEMENTS INCLUSIVE, SAFE, RESILIENT, AND SUSTAINABLE, using our living spaces as a tool to promote your promise of belonging? 12. Holy One, you provide an array of color to amaze and inspire us. We thank you for the potential to use and share the resources around us to delight in beauty. Help us to recognize and appreciate that which we are given, protecting the resources of this world to ENSURE SUSTAINABLE CONSUMPTION AND PRODUCTION PATTERNS, that all future generations may be equally delighted at what is possible from your creation. 13. Creator God, who breathed the cosmos into existence, you included us in your Garden and declared your creation to be whole and very good. As we take this masterpiece for granted, we have disobeyed your call to care for your world. Help us to realize and repent for our sins, and TAKE URGENT ACTION TO COMBAT CLIMATE CHANGE AND ITS IMPACTS to reconcile ourselves to you. 14. O Lord, who made the sea and all that is in it, help us to understand the importance of all that is below the surface, and its connection to all that is above. May our actions to CONSERVE AND SUSTAINABLY USE THE OCEANS, SEAS, AND MARINE RESOURCES FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT reflect a desire to appreciate all your works? 15. May we recognize the universe as “a single celebratory event” and be inspired to redevelop our relationship with the entirety of the cosmos. Help us to shift from a human-focused perspective a one which is based in respecting the beauty of all of existence, and PROTECT, RESTORE, AND PROMOTE SUSTIANABLE USE OF TERRESTRIAL ECOSYSTEMS, SUSTAINABLY MANAGE FORESTS, COMBAT DESERTIFICATION, AND HALT AND REVERSE LAND DEGRADATION AND HALT BIODIVERSITY LOSS. (Quote from Thomas Berry, “The Dream of the Earth”) 16. Your peace you gave to us, a peace that the world cannot fully understand. Inspire us to strive for this peace, that it may be known through the entire world. Breathe this peace upon us, renew within us your call to work for justice, anoint us with the passion to PROMOTE PEACEFUL AND INCLUSIVE SOCIETIES FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, PROVIDE ACCESS TO JUSTICE FOR ALL AND BUILD EFFECTIVE, ACCOUNTABLE, AND INCLUSIVE INSTITUTIONS AT ALL LEVELS. 17. Just as the entirety of our world is interconnected and interdependent, help us to re-imagine and re-create our systems of finance, technology, capacity-building, trade, and policy and institutions. May we STRENGTHEN THE MEANS OF IMPLEMENTATION AND REVITALISE THE GLOBAL PARTNERSHIP FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT to your Glory, uniting the potential and reality for all of your people into just and healthy relationship. VACANCY FOR THE WITTY-- CAN YOU PROVIDE AND ANSWER TO THE GREATEST PUZZLE OF LIFE?

Robert Bigelow , a Las Vegas real estate mogul and Bigelow Aerospace, offers a million dollars to three people who answer a single (though not a simple ) question. As reported by The New York Times , the 75-year-old mogul has always been interested in "anomalous events" and recently founded the Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies to investigate what lies beyond death. Specifically, the billionaire wants to know if it is possible "the survival of human consciousness beyond bodily death ." To do this, scientists, neurologists and psychologists have until August 1, 2021 to submit a response of up to 25 thousand words. A group of specialist judges will select the winner on November 1. Thus the first place will receive 500 thousand dollars, the second 300 thousand and the third 150 thousand. Bigelow's interest has grown since his wife Diane Mona Bigelow passed away in February 2020 of a bone marrow disease and leukemia. However, as reported in the Clarín newspaper, he was introduced to the subject when in 1992 his son Rod Lee took his own life. Bigelow seems not to want to be convinced of the possibility of having a consciousness beyond death because as he told the Times “personally I am totally convinced of it”, however he wants a scientific answer.

ARE YOU READY? TECHNOLOGY AND THE CHANGING WORLD OF TOMORROW

Read the below VERY CAREFULLY! SOUNDS LIKE A SCI-FI MOVIE! Our world is moving quickly and technology will reign. 38 Interesting predictions. 1. Auto repair shops will disappear... 2. A gas/diesel engine has 20,000 individual parts... An electrical motor has 20... Electric cars are sold with lifetime guarantees and are repaired only by dealers... It takes only 10 minutes to remove and replace an electric motor... 3. Faulty electric motors are NOT repaired in the dealership but are sent to a regional repair shop that repairs them with ROBOTS... 4. Your electric motor malfunction light goes on... so you drive up to what looks like a car wash, and your car is towed through while you have a cup of coffee... Then your car comes out on the other side with a new electric motor or component... 5. Gas stations will go away... 6. Street corners will have meters that dispense electricity... Companies will install electrical recharging stations... in fact, they've already started in the developed world... 7. Smart major auto manufacturers have already designated money to start building new plants that build ONLY electric cars... 8. The "Coal Industries" will go away... Gasoline/oil companies will go away... Drilling for oil will stop... So say goodbye to OPEC... The Middle East is in trouble... 9. Homes will produce and store more electrical energy during the day than they use... It will be sold back to "The Grid"... The Grid will store and dispense it, to the industries that are high electricity users. Has anybody seen the Tesla roof? 10. A baby of today will only see "personal cars" in museums. The FUTURE is approaching faster than most of us can even handle... 11. In 1998, Kodak had 170,000 employees and sold 85% of all photo paper worldwide... Within just a few years, their business model disappeared and they went bankrupt... Who would have thought of that ever happening? 12. What happened to Kodak and Polaroid will happen in a lot of industries in the next 5-10 years ... and most people don't even see it coming... 13. Did you think in 1998 that 3 years later, you would never take pictures on film again? With today's smartphones, who even has a camera these days? 14. Yet digital cameras were invented in 1975... The first ones only had 10,000 pixels but followed Moore's law... As with all exponential technologies, it was a disappointment in the beginning ... before it became superior and mainstream in only a few short years... 15. It will now happen again (but much faster) with Artificial Intelligence (AI), health, autonomous and electric cars, education, 3D printing, agriculture and jobs... 16. Forget the book, "Future Shock," welcome to the 4th Industrial Revolution... 17. Software has disrupted and will continue to disrupt most traditional industries... (in the next 5 to 10 years... 18. UBER, is just a software tool (they don't own any cars), and are now the biggest taxi company in the world... (Ask any taxi driver if they saw that coming... 19. AIR-BnB is now the biggest hotel company in the world .. (they don't own any properties)... Ask Hilton Hotels or the Marriott if they saw that coming... 20. Artificial Intelligence (AI): Computers become exponentially better in understanding the world... This year, a computer beat the best Go-player in the world... (10 years earlier than expected)... 21. In the USA, young lawyers already don't get jobs (because of IBM's WATSON)... you can get legal advice within a few seconds so for the basic stuff... with 90% accuracy compared with 70% accuracy when done by humans.. So, if you're studying law, THINK AGAIN... There will be 90% fewer lawyers in the future, what a thought and only omniscient specialists will remain... 22. WATSON already helps nurses diagnosing cancer... it's 4-times more accurate and many times faster than human nurses... 23. Facebook now has a 'face recognition' software that can recognize faces better than humans... In 2030, computers will become more intelligent than humans... 24. Autonomous cars: In 2018 the first self-driving cars were already here... In the next few years, the entire auto industry will start to be disrupted... You won't want to own a car any more as you will call a car with your phone, it will show up at your location and drive you to your destination... 25. You will not need to park it, you will pay only for the 'driven distance' and you can be productive while driving. The very young children of today will never get a driver's license and they will never own a car... 26. This will change our cities because we will need 90% to 95% fewer cars... We can transform former parking spaces into green city parks... 27. About 1.2 million people die each year in car accidents (worldwide). That includes distracted or drunk drivers... We currently have one accident every 60,000 miles driven... However with autonomous driving that will drop to 1 accident in about 6 million miles... That will save a million plus lives, worldwide each year... 28. Most traditional car companies will doubtless become bankrupt.. They will try the evolutionary approach and just build a better car ... while tech companies (Tesla, Apple, Google) will do the revolutionary approach and build a computer on wheels... 29. Look at what Volvo is doing right now... no more internal combustion engines in their vehicles starting this year with the 2020 models... They are using all-electric or hybrid only (with the intent of phasing out hybrid models in the not too distant future)... 30. Many engineers from Volkswagen and Audi are completely terrified of Tesla... Look at all the companies offering all-electric vehicles... That was unheard of, only a few years ago... 31. Insurance companies will have massive trouble too... because, without accidents, the costs of insurance will become cheaper... Their car insurance business model will disappear... 32. Real estate will change... Because if you can work while you commute, or you can work from your home... people will abandon their towers to move far away to more beautiful and affordable properties. 33. Electric cars will become mainstream by about 2030... Cities will be less noisy because all new cars will run ONLY on electricity... 34. Cities will have much cleaner air... 35. Electricity will become incredibly cheap and clean, eventually free... 36. Solar production has been on an exponential curve for 30 years... but you can now see the burgeoning impact... and it's just starting to get ramped up... 37. Fossil energy companies are desperately trying to limit access to the grid... to prevent competition from home solar installations... but that simply cannot continue... Technology will take care of that strategy in the not too distant future... 38. Health: The Tricorder X, price will be announced this year... There are companies who will build a medical device called the "Tricorder" from Star Trek that works with your phone, which takes your retina scan, a sample of your blood, then you breathe into it... It then analyzes 54 biomarkers that will identify nearly any disease.. There are dozens of phone apps out there right now for health... WELCOME TO TOMORROW. To think, I used to complain about my parents and grandparents being "out of it.

The impact of this achievement must be measurable, quantifiable, or otherwise demonstrated either in terms of reduced poverty, hunger, or suffering; or enhanced health, nutrition, quality of life and well-being. It must be clearly shown that this increase in food security was the direct result of the specific actions and activities of the nominee; i.e., without his or her specific accomplishment, no change would have occurred. A nominee must be living and in sufficiently good health to attend the World Food Prize Award Ceremony. The nominee must be able to give an acceptance speech and agree to participate in selected media events and the World Food Prize Global Youth Institute at the time of the Award Ceremony. The Prize is intended to be awarded to one person. In exceptional circumstances where an additional person (or persons) has collaborated in an indispensable way, more than one person may be included in the nomination. However, it must be demonstrated conclusively that each person contributed in an essential way, and that without each individual’s contribution, no achievement would have been possible. The World Food Prize Selection Committee will determine whether a joint nomination meets these criteria, and in cases where it judges this standard has not been met, to limit the number of persons being considered.

CALL FOR DECADE OF ACTION SHORT STORIES

Dear Obi, The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) is issuing a call for The Decade of Action Short Stories, an initiative targeted at young African creativity in an effort to broaden the conversation, awareness and re-imagination of the Sustainable Development Goals through fiction. Young Africans born in Africa or with either of the two parents as African are invited to submit their stories in English during phase 1 of the project. At the time of submission, writers should be between 15 and 35 years of age. According to the guidelines, stories are expected to be grounded on African perspectives, present or possible realities and futures as seen through the challenges of our times: climate change, environment, migration, health, technologies and innovation in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. They should capture the imagination around major challenges confronting the African continent such as eradication of poverty and reduction of inequalities; climate action for a healthy planet and achieving gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls. Shortlisted entries will be included in a special, Decade of Action Anthology of Short Stories to be launched at the annual Africa Regional Forum on Sustainable Development to be held from 1-4 March 2020. The deadline for submissions is 20th of January, 2021. Read the attached guidelines and then submit your story to: eca-info@un.org Kind regards.
